July 2, 2006Appropriately rested from my action packed day yesterday I had a leisurely breakfast and headed out on the subway at 9:30 am. I love the subway system in Montreal since it's safe, efficient and all the major sights are accessible via underground transportation. And the interesting thing is the trains run on rubber wheels - none of that metallic clanking that I am so used to from places like Toronto, New York City or Chicago...My first destination for this morning was Montreal's Olympic complex, located in the Hochelaga-Maissoneuve area, originally a city founded in 1883 by local farmers. Hochelaga-Maissoneuve was integrated into Montreal in 1918 and today is one of Montreal's main working class neighbourhoods whose residents are 90% French-speakers.Montreal's Olympic Stadium is best accessed from the Pie IX subway station and upon leaving the station I walked across the vast concrete expanses surrounding this historic stadium, built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Reporting from San Diego — The Dodgers made a deal with three days remaining until the non-waiver trade deadline, adding not any of the pitchers they are targeting but a player General Manager Ned Colletti called a "safeguard" in case outfielders Manny Ramirez and Reed Johnson remain sidelined for an extended period. The safeguard in question is veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik, whom the Dodgers acquired from the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday for triple-A catcher Lucas May and Class-A right-hander Elisaul Pimentel. Podsednik, 34, has played for five teams over 10 major league seasons, including the World Series champion Chicago White Sox in 2005. A lifetime .280 hitter, he was batting .310 with 44 runs batted in, 46 runs scored and 30 steals. Podsednik, who has a 15-game hitting streak, is expected to join the Dodgers for their series finale in San Diego on Thursday. "He brings us speed," Colletti said. "He's a good hitter. He can play left field. He can play center field, if necessary. He can add a lot of different dimensions to the club." NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ARNA) and Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. (OREX) benefited Tuesday from a rising hope that the Food and Drug Administration is open to approving new obesity treatments. The agency released documents related to a Thursday advisory committee that will review Vivus Inc.'s (VVUS) experimental weight-loss drug Qnexa. Arena's lorcaserin and Orexigen's Contrave are also under review by the agency and will face their own panels later this year. Reality star/convicted celebrity burglar Alexis Neiers was freed from jail on Friday -- and she's already back on Twitter. "I was just released from central regional detention facility!," Alexis, who tweets under the name Alexis Arlington, wrote on Friday. "I feel so blessed to be free and at home with my family!! A good nights sleep! I love all of my fans and supporters I will tweet more tomorrow! XO" Alexis's mother Andrea Arlington had been keeping Alexis's page updated while she was incarcerated. On Wednesday, Andrea posted, "Alexis has been very patient but it is hard. She's hungry, tired, and she just wants to go home. Alexis is frustrated that she is alone in her cell so she cannot help others.
