Claim to fame? Having cooked in restaurants, run a catering company, been formally trained as a chef and now presenting my own travel and food show, World Kitchen as well as being Viva's eating out editor, I can honestly say that food - eating it, growing it, cooking it, writing about it - is my obsession. Career high? For the first episode of World Kitchen the director and I did a sneaky "recce" to the legendary Paul Bocuse's three Michelin star restaurant in Lyon the day before we were due to film there. We were spotted hovering outside (like a couple of scruffy backpackers) by the maitre d', who insisted we come in and have lunch. They sat us both at a table in the corner of the main kitchen and we were able to watch the slick team of 26 handsome French chefs while they fed us four courses of the most incredible food - that we later tallied up was worth well over 0 each. Influences? Travel has always influenced the food I cook. From a young age I set off to explore the world, but it was not the museums, art galleries or famous ruins that [more..]
Darryl Stingley died three years ago at 55. Tatum spent his last years with parts of both legs taken by diabetes. That can't be said without adding this: Stingley spent his last three decades in a wheelchair. Tatum's life was forever changed on Aug. 12, 1978. That can't be said without adding this: Stingley's life was turned into a nightmare. It has always been hard to mention one scarred man without adding the other. Stingley will always be the New England receiver who ended up paralyzed in a wheelchair. Tatum will always be the Oakland defensive back whose tackle put him there. And here is one of the saddest things of all: They never spoke after that terrible intersection of fates. They never reconciled. There was never a postscript to ease any of the anguish. They were never able to look each other in the eye, and at least try to make some sense of one of the NFL's true tragedies. They never will. Even now, the replay is hard to watch, hinting of something ominous. You see Stingley in a white Patriots uniform cutting across the middle, reaching out for a pass, slightly off [more..]

However, from a fantasy perspective, the biggest aspect of the story has very little to do with T.O. himself. For me, the most important thing this move tells us is that Antonio Bryant isn't going to be nearly the fantasy factor I hoped when I called him a midlevel sleeper in our fantasy preview magazine a couple of months ago. Instead, it seems that the Bengals are quite worried about Bryant's troublesome knee. Remember that before they signed Bryant, they first interviewed Owens, then turned around and gave Bryant a four-year deal worth million, with .5 million guaranteed. I have to believe what they've seen of Bryant so [more..]
Look out, Ken and Sue! A new coach has been hired at William McKinley High School. Dot Jones has landed the recurring role of a football coach on Glee, as the little-known actress is best known for having appeared as Tess on Nip/Tuck. Earlier this week, it was announced that Chord Overstreet would also recur on the second season of the show. You can sound off on both casting tidbits in our Glee forum. [more..]
Some people call it slavery, other people “mandatory service.” Whatever your take, bill H.R. 5741 is currently being debated in the House of Representatives, and if you are between the ages of 18-42, could directly impact your life for two years. The Daily Contributor reports that the bill would require for people between the ages of 18-42 to give two years of mandatory service to the government, “either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security.” (You can read the bill H.R. 5741 in its entirety here.) The bill was introduced by Charles Rangel, who is currently under an ethics investigation, and has no co-sponsor. Similar bills have gone before the house before. H.R. 1444 aimed to promote volunteerism. Rahm Emanuel also outlined a similar plan, but Emanuel’s plan required three months of compulsory service from 18-25 year olds. It isn’t likely that the bill passes through the house, but in uncertain times and depression like conditions, I suppose its possible. More From Our Independent Writers!
